From visits in December, 2006 and January, 2009. The Big Sur drive to Hearst Castle is one that has to be exerienced to fully appreciate. As nice as these pictures are of the drive and as competent as I have become taking windshield shots from driving all over this great country of ours, I certainly had to just put my camera down and drive...too dangerous and beautiful to be snapping windshield shots...those are the twists and turns I cannot show you here, because I did just that, put my camera down. A stunningly beautiful, breathtaking, heart pumping drive for sure.

Hearst castle was built from 1919 through 1947 for William Randolph Hearst. It encompasses 60,000 square feet, plus 3 guest houses with an additional 10,000 SF. Another fine example of California's Gold, as Huell Howser always concluded his programs with. RIP Huell.

If you're looking for a great hotel in the area, Business Insider magazine named
Post Ranch Inn, a private getaway that offers stunning ocean and mountain views, as "Best Hotel in California" for 2015. This eco-friendly treehouse resort is perched high atop the cliffs of Big Sur, 1,200 feet above sea-level.
