From April 11th to April 30th, 2010, I drove the shoreline, or as close as I could, of Michigan's lower peninsula. What an awesome trip. The grass and flowers waking from the winter snow, the tourists had not yet started their trek to this beautiful coastline and the weather was spectacular.
Just a great time to travel...many "Mom and Pop" motels to take advantage of, although I did splurge in Mackinaw City for 5 nights, staying in a beautiful suite overlooking Lake Huron...at offseason prices. I have included the lighthouses I managed to find and photograph. None were officially "open"...May 1st is the day for that and I was just a little early. Big Sable Point was a nice find, after trekking 1/2 mile in the sand. The lighthouse keepers were so very nice as to give me a tour to the top, although the lighthouse was not officially open.
The few snow pictures of St. Jo and Southaven are from a different time, when actually "living" in MI, but thought they were worth including. Also, I took many, many more pictures on this trip than these, especially of the great, quaint towns and villages driven through and visited, but focus was on the lighthouses for this gallery.
1100 miles is what I remember driving for the trip from St. Jo to Detroit to the last lighthouse. I did cross the Mackinaw bridge a few times over to the U.P. (Upper Peninsula.) St. Ignace lighthouse was a nice find there and the only one in the U.P. in this collection. What a great excursion...I would recommend this trip to anyone. Hope you enjoy what I have posted. Having lived in Michigan for 6-7 years, I wil always remember this trip as a wonderful time in my life.
